Frequently Asked Questions

ABN is an 11-digit number that identifies businesses to the government and community for tax and business purposes.

There are several reasons why you may need an ABN: -Enhances business credibility: Displaying your ABN on invoices and websites can boost the perceived legitimacy of your business. Clients can easily verify your credentials through an ABN lookup. -GST and PAYG registration: To register for Goods and Services Tax (GST) or Pay As You Go (PAYG), an ABN is required. -GST registration threshold: If your company anticipates an annual turnover of $74,999 or more, registering for GST becomes mandatory, and an ABN is necessary for this process. Application requirements: Most applications, including bank account setups, typically demand both an ABN and an ACN. -Business name registration: Obtaining an ABN is a prerequisite for registering a business name for your company.

ABN-Registration-Australia guarantees, subject to the below exceptions, that you will receive your ABN and/or business name within 14 working days, otherwise we will issue a full refund of the ABN fee and/or business name (minus payment & administration fees). Exceptions: -If the information you have supplied to us is incomplete or incorrect at the time of application, the 14 working day period will not start until correct information is supplied. -If you already had an existing ABN at the time of application. -If your application is rejected by the ATO and they require you to communicate with them, whether in person to present identification information or via telephone or email, our guarantee does not apply. -If an ABN application/business name is marked for manual review, the ATO reserve the right to keep the application for up to 28 days, during which time they may contact you for verification. This is beyond our control and voids our guarantee.

You can choose to register your business name for ONE year, for $199, or THREE years, for $299 (including GST).

Registering a business name grants you the right to conduct business using that name, but it does not provide exclusive ownership or rights to the name, as a trademark would. Before registering a business name, it is crucial to verify that the proposed name is not already trademarked or patented. To perform this check, you can visit the IP Australia website (www.ipaustralia.gov.au). Additionally, if you wish to obtain trademark protection for your business name, you can apply for a trademark through the IP Australia website.

It is possible to register multiple business names. However, please note that you will need to submit separate applications for each individual business name you wish to register.

ASIC no longer issues hard copies of certificates for business name registrations, however one will be delivered via email. There is no obligation to display your record of registration, though you can do if you would like.

You will not be able to register a certain business name if: -It is already in use by a registered company or business - this includes a spelling and/or pronunciation test -It is offensive and/or suggestive of illegal activity -It suggests a misleading connection with the government, royal family or ex-serviceman’s association -It is a word that requires approval from a government agency or Minister, i.e. University, Building Society, Trust, Chartered etc. -For a full list, please visit: http://asic.gov.au/for-business/registering-a-business-name/before-you-start/business-name-availability/business-name-availability-tests/.

No, you cannot change an existing business name. In order to trade with a different name you must register a new business name.
