Questions

Frequently asked questions

What is an ABN?
An ABN is an 11-digit number that identifies your business to the government and community for tax and business purposes.
Do I need an ABN?
You may need an ABN to invoice clients, register for GST or PAYG, register a business name, or set up a business bank account. GST registration becomes mandatory once your annual turnover reaches $75,000.
Isn't ABN registration free through the government?
Yes — ABN registration is free if you apply directly through the Australian Business Register (abr.gov.au). Our $89.95 service fee covers the review, correction and lodgement of your application by a registered Tax & ASIC Agent, helping ensure it's submitted correctly the first time, plus support for complex cases.
What is your refund policy?
We guarantee you'll receive your ABN and/or business name within 14 working days, or we'll refund the registration fee (minus payment & administration fees), subject to exceptions — including incomplete information, an existing ABN, ATO rejection requiring your contact, or applications marked by the ATO for manual review (up to 28 days).
How much does business name registration cost?
You can register a business name for one year ($199) or three years ($299), including GST.
Does registering a business name also trademark it?
No. A business name gives you the right to trade under that name but not exclusive ownership. For exclusive rights, apply for a trademark through IP Australia (ipaustralia.gov.au).
How long does it take to get an ABN?
Most ABNs are issued within 15 minutes of lodgement and emailed to you. Occasionally the ATO needs to review an application before issuing the ABN, which can take up to 28 days — if that happens, we’ll keep you updated.
What is the difference between an ABN and an ACN?
An ABN (Australian Business Number) is an 11-digit number that identifies your business for tax and dealings with the ATO and other businesses. An ACN (Australian Company Number) is a 9-digit number issued by ASIC to companies only. A company has both an ACN and an ABN; sole traders and partnerships have an ABN but no ACN.
Can I register a company, and what’s included?
Yes. We register your company with ASIC and obtain its ACN, then prepare the company’s ABN, TFN and PAYG registration, along with the constitution, member register and share certificates. You’ll need your proposed company name, each director’s details and Director ID, and how the shares are divided.
Do I need to register for GST?
You must register for GST if your business turnover is $75,000 or more in a financial year ($150,000 for non-profits), or if you provide taxi or rideshare services. Many new businesses also register voluntarily. You can add GST registration to your application as you go.
Can I register an ABN for a partnership?
Yes. A partnership is two or more people or entities carrying on a business together. We prepare and lodge the partnership’s ABN and can also register its business name, TFN and GST. Each partner’s details are included in the application.
Can I register as a sole trader, and do I need a separate TFN?
Yes. A sole trader trades as an individual using their own ABN — the simplest structure to set up. You use your existing individual Tax File Number (TFN), so there’s no separate TFN to apply for, and you can add a business name or GST to the same application.
Can I cancel or update an existing ABN?
Yes. If you stop trading or your details change, your ABN should be cancelled or updated to stay accurate. We can cancel an ABN on your behalf, or help you update details such as your business address, contact information or structure.
What is a Director ID and do I need one?
A Director Identification Number (Director ID) is a free, one-time number that every company director in Australia must hold. You apply for it once through Australian Business Registry Services, and you’ll need each director’s Director ID to complete a company registration.
